Faith & a Simple Life

We can always find something to be thankful for, no matter what may be the burden of our wants, or the special subject of our petitions.

This quote by Albert Barnes is well worth pondering, maybe even over a quiet moment spent having your afternoon tea. We all have struggles. Some may be simple, like trying to juggle a busy schedule. Others are harder, such as trying to scrape up enough money to feed your family and paying the bills. Some of us may be going through the death of a loved one, a serious battle with health issues, or losing our job. Life can be tough to navigate, even in the best of times.

But as difficult as life can be, we can always find something to be thankful for. I once read a book in which the writer told of a story he had heard. While sitting at the table, the people around it were instructed to look at a glass partially filled. They were all asked if the glass was half full or half empty. One person commented, ‘I’m just glad there’s a glass!’ Because the glass was there, the liquid in it was contained.

This Thanksgiving don’t worry about whether your glass is half full or half empty. Instead, look around you at all the ‘glasses’ you have – a God who loves you, a family to cherish, friends to enjoy, and a home that is your safe haven in good times and in hard times. And before you know it, you will realize your glass isn’t half full or half empty – instead, it is overflowing.

If you aren’t sure where to start, here are a few things to ponder:

·        The family and friends that surround you.

·        The love and laughter you experience each and every day.

·        The ability to lend a helping hand – to those you know and those you don’t.

·        The soldiers and other military personnel that work day and night to protect your freedom.

·        The smiles you give and get that brighten even the gloomiest of days.

·        Each and every day you wake up – and be sure to make the absolute best of it, no matter what your circumstances are.

·        The old and young alike. The old can help you learn from history; the young can offer you a fresh perspective.

·        The joy of life itself –and the ability to offer it as a gift to others.

·        The love of a Savior who teaches us what it truly means to be thankful.

I lift my glass to you, and wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving, with overflowing glasses.
