Episode 1: Podcast Introduction

Hi. I’m Julie, also known as the Farm Wife. I am all about Living a Simple Life, and from my perspective, sitting on a porch, on the back stoop, or in a swing in the yard is one of the simplest things you can do. Life happens on the porch – whether that porch is real or virtual, like this one.

Either way, if you are listening in, you can sit down in a swing in your yard, a lawn chair underneath a tree, behind the wheel of the car or just curl up in your favorite comfy chair in the house – and still enjoy the conversation. All you have to do is settle in for a good visit, no matter where you are.

And there is nothing better than sitting on a porch, a glass of lemonade or iced tea in hand, and just relaxing. Whether on a swing, a rocker, or a lawn chair, life just seems to slow down. Worries seem to loosen and begin to grow wings, eventually taking flight.

A sense of calm wraps around you like Grandma’s old worn-out quilt – comfortable and familiar. Before you know it, you are able to contemplate life, and those old forgotten dreams begin to emerge like fireflies on a summer evening – just one or two at first, and then a whole swarm of them.

Conversations are carried on while sitting on the Porch. Dreams are created or revisited. Laughter bubbles up like soft sweet music. Faith is strengthened. And life lessons are taught with a wisdom that can only come from an experience that is steeped in hard work, faith, and a seat-of-the-pants life.

A Porch is a place where you can rock away your cares and worries and join in on the latest conversation.  To get you started, we will first talk about what a Simple Life is, help you do some dreaming about what you would like yours to be, and how to get you started on your journey.

From there, we will talk about all things relevant to living a Simple Life –like homemaking, gardening, and canning and preserving the harvest.  We may be discussing crafts, like knitting, crocheting, or maybe one of the ‘old time’ crafts, such as weaving, spinning, and even nalbinding – which is an ancestor of knitting and crochet.

In some episodes we may talk about the art of baking bread and cooking from scratch or tending to the home.  And we may just be rocking away and talking about life lessons, recipes, and faith.

We live on a 60-acre small farm, and around here, there is always something to learn. It may be tips and tricks that help me slow down and enjoy life a bit more. It may be a discussion on life lessons that I learn from others. Some of those lessons may even come from the animals here on the farm. Even Sherman, the goldfish, has taught me a thing or two about life. Wherever they come from, I will be sharing them with you, as well!

While listening to these podcast episodes, get ready for a few of those life lessons. These lessons will come through observations, experience, faith, and the thoughts of others who have learned the art of living a good life.  I will share stories designed to encourage, uplift, and help you work towards living your own Simple Life. And from time to time, I will even toss in a recipe and freebie or two.

You can also get ready for our visits ahead of time by making a fresh batch of cookies and stirring up a pitcher of ice-cold lemonade (or even pouring a cup of hot chocolate, if the weather is cold out there).
